Major Grants for 2001-2002
The Society is pleased to announce that, as a result of the ninth competition for the research grants set up with funds received towards its centenary appeal, the following awards have been made:
- $1,500 from the Bibliographical Society of America, as the Fredson Bowers award, to Ms Catherine M. Rodriguez for her study of the publication history of Frances Burney, with an additional award of £500 to be paid by the Society;
- £500 to Dr Leslie Howsam, as the Falconer Madan Award, for her work on the correspondence of historians and their publishers in Oxford collections;
- £1,685 to Mr Giles Mandelbrote for his work on European book trade and library catalogues before 1800: the award associated with the name of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association;
- £1,100 to Professor Gillian Fenwick for research on the publishing history of the Dictionary of National Biography;
- £1,200 to Ms Colleen Franklin for a new edition and a publication history of The Strange and Dangerous Voyage of Captaine Thomas James (1633);
- £1,034 to Dr Nigel Hall for work on the print trades of eighteenth-century London;
- £1,800 to Dr Hedwig Gwosdek for work on William Lily’s Latin grammar and the beginnings of grammar writing in English;
- £1,500 to Dr Gillian Hughes for the study of a recently-discovered manuscript of James Hogg’s The Three Perils of Man (1822);
- £500 to Dr Malcolm Jones for work on English C16 and C17 broadside prints in Oxford collections.
